How Solar Power Systems Work

PV power systems convert sunlight directly into electricity. A residential PV power system enables a homeowner to generate some or all of their daily electrical energy demand on their own roof, exchanging daytime excess power for future energy needs (i.e. nighttime usage). The house remains connected to the electric utility at all times, so any power needed above what the solar system can produce is simply drawn from the utility.

What Solar Systems Cost

Your price for home solar panels depends on a number of factors, including whether PV is ground mounted or mounted on top of an existing roof. The price also depends on the PV system rating, manufacturer, retailer, and installer. The size of your system may be the most significant factor in any measurement of costs versus benefits.

Rebates

The California Solar Initiative (CSI) is currently paying a rebate that covers 20–30 percent of the total system cost.

In addition to the rebate, investments in residential solar electricity qualify for a $2,000 federal income tax credit. These incentives cover a significant portion of the total cost and result in solar power being less expensive than utility power.
