Is it possible to offset more of my bill with less solar?

  • Yes, by using more efficient solar panels and inverters. The extra energy production is very inexpensive at the time of the system's installation. Due to lower energy losses (degradation) over longer periods of time, selecting higher efficiency material at the outset is better when considering solar.
  • Conserve energy first. This is typically cheaper than generating new electricity with solar. Replacing an old inefficient appliance like a freezer with a new $800 freezer will save approximately $7,000 in solar, or the initial cost of solar panels it would have taken to offset more energy versus conserving energy! Other big-ticket items such as a new high-efficiency AC/heating system will normally save you $7,000 in solar-panel costs.
  • Conservation is part of "basic maintenance" when it comes to your solar. It is important to take methods of conservation into consideration when initially sizing a solar system for your needs.
  • Utilize the new time-of-use meter that is installed. By simply altering when you use energy, you can secure lower rate charges and get credited at much higher rates whenever you overproduce energy in the afternoon. This practice will greatly reduce the size of solar system required. This is a little-known fact about the time-of-use meter that can usually have a big impact in savings and we're happy to share this with our customers.
